Struggle, Despair, Loss of Identity are few abbreviations for the feelings of refugees. The idea was to design a Distraction, from negative chaos of the refugee camps towards positive chaos of happiness, by creating a provoking form. The idea of the play module was to actively engross the children through 3-d movement and elements to create Deep Memories of Joy.

The module is designed to answer questions at context level and engagement level. Responding at context level involved creation of a strong and positive distraction, amidst the existing negative chaos. Key issues like monotonous routines of people, monotonous built forms, loss of individuality and responsibility of growing children are chosen to address through our design.  The clarity of intent helped us ask few questions like What would be the Character of the Place? What would be the ecology of activities around it? How should it be perceived? The context is imagined as a landscape of play elements, rather than finite play structures. The intent was to see the play module as an opportunity and add an element in the context which celebrates hope and happiness. The idea of stimulation prompted the design to take a dynamic and skeletal form. This stimulation acts as the positive distraction. Metaphorically, the play module is like a perfume bottle emanating fragrance in a room.

Critical questioning and finding a observation based research methodology helped to balance theory and bold design response. Moving beyond the functional towards the realm of emotion, experience and engagement was a milestone in realizing unique design decision making.

No problem is big or complex enough, if you break it down into smaller parts smartly.
