Garden of Contemplation

Land Building Relationship Studio, Winter 2018
Guided by Kavita Menghani and Milind Patel

In today's time, when information is all around, this library aims to become a place of contemplation. Our generation often lacks the afterthought that should follow the encounter with information. This library seeks to create an environment where one can reflect on their own thoughts and provide a haven of rest for the energetic mind amidst the urban lifestyle. As Mahatma Gandhi's ideology goes, “Simple Living and High Thinking”...

Outset: Even an encounter with a great drawing or a good post on social media is often flicked away within seconds without a second thought.

Larger Decisions for Creating a Contemplative Environment:

  • Segregating public and silent individualist functions

  • Spreading activities and user density across the site

  • Diverting the attention of users to natural features by re-examining the notion of inside and outside

  • Exploring silence and light to create an atmosphere of awe

  • Using expanse to create a sense of looseness and relaxation
